Discover the impact of donating your clutter and transforming lives in your community. Learn how to turn unused items into meaningful contributions.
Have you ever looked around your home and wondered what to do with the items you no longer need? Maybe you’re downsizing, clearing out a storage unit, or just trying to declutter. Often, we hold onto things because we’re unsure where they’ll have the most impact. For many, the idea of donating is appealing, but they want to ensure their contributions go directly to people in need or organizations that offer items for free to families facing hardship. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
Let’s shift the focus to you—how can you take those items sitting unused in your home and turn them into a meaningful gift for someone in your community? Read on for examples of what we’ve done to inspire you to take action where you live.
Making Connections That Matter: Donate Your Clutter
In our work helping clients declutter, we’ve seen how impactful it is to connect unneeded items with the right organizations. It’s not just about clearing space; it’s about giving those items a second life where they’re truly needed. One of our favorite local organizations is Arbor Youth Services, and their mission shows the incredible difference such connections can make.
Arbor Youth Services: A Model for Community Impact
Arbor Youth Services is the only emergency shelter in Central Kentucky for unaccompanied children. They provide a safe, caring environment for kids up to age 17 who are homeless, removed from unsafe homes, or runaways. For young adults aged 18–24, they offer resources and support to help them transition into stable housing and independent living.
Virginia Carmical, a key figure at Arbor Youth, has been absolutely instrumental in making many of these connections happen. Her tireless efforts and genuine passion for helping children and young adults ensure that every donation and resource is put to the best possible use. We are so grateful for her - she truly goes above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of so many in our community. Our team is dedicated to fostering strong relationships within the community, and Virginia is a shining example of this effort. Thank you, Virginia, for all that you do!
As you think about giving back in your community, consider organizations like Arbor Youth—those that provide essential services and directly impact lives. Here are some stories of how we’ve supported them, and ideas for how you can implement similar acts of giving where you are.
Downsizing: Turning a Move Into a Gift
One of our clients recently had to move out of his apartment quickly. He had furniture he no longer needed but wanted it to go somewhere meaningful. This is where Arbor Youth stepped in. By partnering with the Swahili Elks Lodge #1611, a local fraternal organization, they helped organize trucks and trailers to move a family room and bedroom’s worth of furniture. Even some of the young adults from Arbor Youth’s programs joined in, creating a powerful moment of teamwork and community.
How You Can Do This: If you’re downsizing or moving, look for local organizations that can use furniture or household goods. Some may even help coordinate pickup, making it easy for you to give back. Habitat ReStore, which is nationwide, typically offers pickup of furniture donations and other large items like appliances and building materials.
Baby Supplies: Small Items, Big Impact
Another client contributed over 50 gift bags, wrapping supplies, and totes of like-new baby clothes for a community baby shower hosted by Lexington-Fayette County Health Department. These donations ensured young parents had essentials to start their journey with hope and support.
How You Can Do This: Do you have gently used baby items or clothes your children have outgrown? Check with local shelters or charities supporting young families. Even small contributions can create a ripple effect of positive change.
Storage Units: Letting Go for Good
One client had a storage unit filled with items they hadn’t touched in years. With Arbor Youth’s help, we cleared out the unit and donated the contents to families in need. This effort not only reduced our client’s expenses but also transformed those stored items into tools for helping others.
How You Can Do This: Take stock of any storage units or unused spaces in your home. What’s there that could benefit someone else? Partner with local organizations that can help distribute those items to families who need them.
